Last Friday, July 31, 2015, Netflix premiered their original series of Wet Hot American Summer: First Day at Camp. If you are looking for a new show to binge on, look no more. The show is a prequel to the 2001 comedy cult movie Wet Hot American Summer. Let’s just say Netflix has dominated with their original TV series with widely successful shows including Orange is the New Black, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, and House of Cards. It looks like they killed it again reuniting the entire all-star, hilariously talented, cast almost fifteen years later.
Netflix has become the number one subscription provider for viewing movies and television shows through online streaming. Over the years the cinema experience has changed drastically and fast with the ever expanding technologies allowing us to enjoy unlimited genres of movies and TV shows from the comfort of our own homes. DVD providers such as Blockbuster and Red Box have quickly become obsolete since Netflix. Streaming media online is not only more convenient, but also economical for the average person. Also, the commercial free experience has changed the way people enjoy TV shows. Without commercial breaks and the annoying mid-season hiatuses people are able to binge watch as many episodes as possible.
Since its premiere binge watching this show is exactly what I’ve been doing; finishing the whole first season in only a week. The show is comic genius with guaranteed non-stop laugh out loud moments. Usually sequels/prequels are never as satisfying as the original, but this show is just as good as the movie by giving the characters more depth with backstories. It was a perfect plot extension of the movie. We learned the origins of some unexplained jokes from the movie such as the talking mixed canned vegetables. The show also stuck true to the original movie offering the same full range of comedy styles with a mix of witty, satire, and parody humor.
The storyline was perfection, but the cast is really what made this series so fantastic. Some of the biggest names in Hollywood are apart of this cast including Paul Rudd, Bradley Cooper, Janeane Garofalo, Amy Poehler, Elizabeth Banks, Christopher Meloni, and more. While the whole original cast was able to reunite the new characters only added to this dream team of actors. Seriously, never before has such a group of A list Hollywood stars participated in a TV series making this show really unique in its own right.
Now I don’t know what’s in the water at Camp Firewood, but whatever it is I want some. It looks like they are drinking straight from the fountain of youth. More then a decade after the movie each cast member looks better then the next. It’s kind of ridiculous.
If you have already binged on the full series, but you’re still craving more Netflix has you covered. Hurricane of Fun: Making of Hot Wet is never seen before footage giving us a glimpse of the behind-the-scenes production of the movie.
